Joël O’Cangha is quite an energetic Frère Laurent in his sleek priestly robes, and transforms the otherwise insipid role into one victimized by an oddly amiable vanity. The “parents” are almost relatively weak—Arié Itah seemed like a strange choice for Lord Capulet, and Stéphanie Rodrigue and Brigitte Venditti as the two mistresses suffer from a reduction of roles—yet their renditions of “Grosse” and “La haine” are nonetheless addictive. In the role of the Prince of Vérone, Stéphane Métro sports his well-placed icy charisma to the fullest extent, although one does wish the Prince would show a little more emotion at Mercutio’s death; after all, it’s his nephew in the musical, not just any kinsman. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(204, 51, 204);"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">Christine Hassid as La Mort, or Death, is considerably less sinister—and less Romeo-baiting—than in the 2001 production, a detached, mute being who is all the more menacing.
